We're a clothing partner to Sunsail, who have been running sailing holidays and events for over 40 years. They're active in sailing destinations all around the world, so there's no one better to tell us about some of the best places that you can see from the sea.
1. Anse Lazio, Seychelles
A three hour, open water sail out of Mahe will get you to Anse Lazio on Praslin. Consistently ranked as one of the world’s greatest beaches, relax on the white powder sand or snorkel with the turtles in the shallow rock pools.
2. South Water Cay, Belize
A private island with a barrier reef just off shore. Meander your way through the coral, find a mooring buoy and take your dinghy ashore. Grab your mask and flippers to explore the diverse marine life. Push on south to Carrie Bow Caye to visit the Smithsonian Research Centre and choose between three restaurants on the north end offering spectacular sea food.
3. Great Barrier Reef, Whitsundays
One of the seven natural wonders of the world. The vast expanse of this sub-aqueous landscape runs the length of the Queensland coastline. The Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest living thing on earth and is even visible from space. Gaze out at its magnificence from the three mile unspoilt white sands of Whitehaven Beach on Whitsunday Island.
4. Underwater Sculpture Park, Grenada
Molinere Bay is host to the world’s first underwater sculpture park that you can dive down and explore. As well as enhancing and encouraging a healthy environment for marine life, the sculptures reflect a number of themes including Grenadian culture, history and the nature of change. It is unlikely you will have experienced art in this way before.
5. The Blue Grotto, Croatia
Komiza, on the island of Vis off Croatian’s Dalmatian coast is a town full of treasures. Walk through streets of ancient stone brick and terracotta roofs, explore the castle and enjoy the local wine. Just a few miles away on the much smaller island of Bisevo you’ll find the Blue Grotto – a flooded sea cave that is bathed in eerie and ethereal blue light at certain times of the day.
6. Tonsai Bay Full Moon Party, Thailand
An adventurer’s paradise where forest fringed cliffs stand over the ocean, great for rock climbers and selfie hunters alike, a powder soft beach lined with bars and small resorts allow it to host full moon parties with all of the fun of more famous islands with less of the carnage sometimes associated with them. You will find some of the world’s most horizontal people staying here for long periods of time, just watching the world go by.
7. Swim with Eagle Rays in Motu To’Upua, Tahiti
Dive or snorkel with these gentle endangered giants off the coasts and reefs of French Polynesia. A fully grown Eagle Ray can be up to 16ft long, have a wing span of up to 10ft and can weigh up to 36 stone. They are often solitary, shy and fast moving but have been known to show curiosity around human divers and are prone to sudden leaps out of the water, often in a very majestic fashion.
8. Catch a play at the Epidaurus amphitheatre, Greece
Dating back to the 4th Century BC and still used to stage theatre performances today, this wonderful feat of ancient engineering and dedication to the time-honoured arts is worth a visit at any time of the day, purely to take in the sheer scope and symmetry of this ancient treasure.
9. Wreck diving in Ventotene
Sailing out into blue water from Procida to the North West, you’ll find Ventotene, a tiny island with a big place in history. Originally a place to banish exiled noble women during the heady days of the Roman Empire, It served as a prison commune under Mussolini and a German radar station during the war.
In more recent times, a ‘graveyard of’ ancient Roman ships have been discovered deep down on the sea bed. They are currently protected for their archaeological importance but visitors can still use the local one-stop dive shop on the island to explore other relatively recent wrecks and intriguing underwater geography and marine life.
