Love Sailing? My Best Moment: Jamie Cook
Posted by jennie on 2nd Feb 2018
We asked our Gill Race Team members about their best moments in sailing. Here's what Jamie Cook had to say.
1. What’s the best moment in your sailing career?
My most memorable experience was the Optimist selections in 2016. This was the event that decided which sailors will represent Britain at the World Championships. However, early on into the event I picked up two black flags in an event with only one discard. So with 8 races left I found myself 80 points behind. I then sailed an extremely good series but with only one race left on the last day I was 25 points behind the last words place. I went out that morning feeling confident and sailed the perfect last race to win it. And my closest competitor in fifth had some trouble on the line and had to count a 33rd meaning that I moved up to fifth overall and went to represent Britain in Portugal at the Optimist World Championships! This motivated me to carry on with Optimists to try and represent Britain again.
2. What is your favourite Gill kit?
My favourite piece of kit is the Thermoskin Suit because it was the main piece of kit that helped me to keep warm over the winter. It is extremely warm and versatile. I normally wear this in conjunction with the Hydrophobe Trousers and Top which helps completely insulate me in the harsh winter. Furthermore, the Aquatech Shoes are very comfy and are one of my most worn pieces of kit, and seem to be very popular around the boat park.
