PYE DIARIES – RS FEVA WORLDS

Posted by gill_admin on 10th Aug 2017

What a summer of sailing we are having!  To start with Fergus was extracted from school a couple of days early so that we could head over to Medemblik in the Netherlands in time for the RS Feva Worlds. We travelled over on the Harwich ferry accompanied by many other sailing friends and set up camp at this superb venue on the Ijsselmeer. Our qualifying series went off reasonably well with some varied results qualifying us in 19th and safely in the gold fleet.  The first day of the final series brought some higher wind conditions which we did well in. After some solid races we moved up to 11th place. The final two days of racing brought light winds and we fell back down to 18th position overall at the end of the event. We were satisfied with this result in a high quality fleet; and our congratulations go to the overall winners, Eli Liefting and Rose Dickson from New Zealand. We picked up 3rd family prize. Due to the great setting we spent most of our evenings either swimming both at the local pool and at the beach or chatting with friends.

The piece of kit that we both found most useful and flexible for this event was the Thermoskin Top. Due to the varying temperatures we found that this was great to switch to in between races when we got colder, layering up or down as necessary.

At the end of the RS Feva Worlds we packed up and headed off down to Carnac, in Brittany for the RS Tera Worlds which Fergus was taking part in and Harrison was helping the British coaching team.  After a couple of days on the road we arrived at this pretty town in the Morbihan region.  The campsite offered the necessaries (pool and bakery) and the Yacht Club de Carnac made everyone feel very welcome.  The racing area could be seen from the beach next to the club; this quickly was renamed Tera Beach on account of all the binoculars trained on the racing.

Fergus had a good week sailing in some mixed conditions ranging from little or no wind to blowing old boots and was pleased to finish 8th overall.  The last day saw many competitors swapping their team colours with sailors from other nations and friends have been made for life over the slide in the local pool.

Fergus used his Pro Top every day in Carnac, it was small enough to pack into his Dry Bag if he didn’t need it and kept him dry when the rain came without causing him to overheat.

So is that it for Team Pye Sailing this summer?  Nope, there is more to come.  Fergus has the RS Tera Nationals to look forward to at Weymouth at the end of August, and Harrison is packing up to go to the 29er Nationals.  We will keep you posted on how we get on...
