What to wear for paddling: Spring Edit

Posted by Gill Marine on 20th Mar 2022

For plenty out there, different forms of paddling are what do it for us. Gently passing over the surface of the water and enjoying all that nature has to offer is a real joy. Whether your preference is kayaking, canoeing or stand up paddleboarding, the thrill of being out on the water is something special.

This can be really appealing as the days start to get brighter and warmer. Many of us will want to get back to paddling, or try it for the first time, this spring.

There are plenty of do’s and don’ts when paddling. But a definite ‘do’ is get what you are wearing right. A common question we hear at Gill is around what to wear for paddling in the spring. Although the weather can be pleasant, the water can still be on the chilly side. That means being prepared and having the right type of kit is very important.

As part of our Spring Edit , we want to talk about what to wear for paddling this spring season. You might be wondering what to wear kayaking, what to wear canoeing, or what you need to really enjoy stand up paddleboarding. Here are some of our top products to consider when it comes to spring paddling.

Drysuits

As keen as you may be to get going, the fact of the matter is that in spring, that means having gear that can keep you protected against the cold is a good idea. A Drysuit is a great way to stay completely protected from the neck downwards.

Made with XPLORE+® 3-layer fabric technology, this means it’s highly durable, breathable and fully waterproof. The high breathability levels means you can easily layer up underneath with cool, comfortable and moisture wicking layers, without getting too hot or sweaty.

In fact, you can wear pretty much whatever you like underneath, as the Drysuit will stop the water from the neck seal, all the way down to your feet. Make sure to check out our layering guide to ensure you have the correct layers to keep the moisture away from your skin.

It also features in-built adjustable braces to ensure a great fit, Glideskin neck seal, and fabric socks for advanced wearability and comfort.

Wetsuits

Another key option is a wetsuit, which is a better fit for anybody who is more likely to end up in the water or may see a lot of water splash – for example our stand up paddleboarders or kayakers!

Check out our wetsuit range, and we particularly recommend the Pursuit wetsuits for paddlers. 4/3mm neoprene means you have the flexibility to move, while the back zip let’s you change with ease. It’s mesh skin chest and back panel with thermal fabric lining also make wearing this wetsuit ideal for colder water.

Rash Vests

Rash vests are a fantastic light layer that can be worn underneath a wetsuit for warmth and to ease the rubbing of neoprene. They can also be worn alone as your top layer in warmer weather, protecting you from the sun and water spray.

Part of our Sustainable Edit, we highly recommend our Eco Pro Rash Vests made from PET plastic bottles - lightweight pieces of kit, with 4- way stretch for enhanced movement.

Our Eco Rash Vests also have flatlocked seams for comfort and next to skin fit. And what’s more, with

50+ UV protection, they are perfect for wearing all day when the sun is shining.

Spray Tops

An excellent way to protect against water spray, our Spray Tops are made with 2 layers of coated fabric, a great way to repel water and stop windchill.

Factor in the elasticated waistband and wristbands, and these spray tops can be the ideal item to wear when out paddling this spring allowing you to wear over a thermal layer to keep you going all day.

Zip Necks and Hoodies

Layering is an excellent way to stay warm when temperatures fluctuate. Something to consider

wearing under a spray top or on its own when the weather and water is on the chillier side is a zip neck or hoodie.

These garments are great for wearing before or after your time in the water, or for wearing while out on the water if you are not planning on getting too wet.

We highly recommend our new Langland Hoodie. Featuring 4-way stretch thermal fabric for warmth and our plant-based XPEL® fabric finish offering incredible levels of water repellency to protect against spray or light showers.

Neoprene Socks and Shoes

Some paddlers (especially those on a SUP) like to get out on the water barefoot – some say it helps them to ‘feel’ the board beneath their feet. Unfortunately, when paddling in the UK, this may only be possible to do for the warmest months of the year!

Our extremities are one of first things we notice getting cold when our body is losing heat. This means keeping them protected and warm is vital to factor in when paddling in spring.

Neoprene footwear offers ample flexibility, waterproofness and thermal benefits, allowing you to move comfortably and easily. The difference between our neoprene socks and neoprene shoes is that the shoes offer greater levels of grip. The shoes also have more reinforcement on the heels, toes and sole and adjustable ankle straps to secure the fit.

Our neoprene socks are a thinner neoprene, allowing you to pull them on like normal socks.

3 Seasons Gloves

That’s the feet covered then, but what about hands? We recommend these 3 Seasons Gloves, which as the name suggests are the perfect glove for transitional seasons.

Constructed with lightweight neoprene, the design of these gloves means they will keep your hands warm and protected.

The 3 Seasons gloves also offer dura-grip fabric on the palm and extended cuff length. This is designed to tuck underneath your outer layers.

The ‘no seam’ fingertips and pre-shaped construction make for a comfortable fit, while an added bonus is that they are touch screen compatible.

Headwear

As well as our feet and hands, our heads also release a lot of heat. This means that on days in the spring where you’re out in colder conditions, having suitable headwear can make a big difference.

Items like beanies are great for colder days, while caps can keep the sun out of your eyes when the heat arrives. Our headwear range contains plenty of options to consider.

Buoyancy Aid

Safety should always be paramount whatever watersport you are taking part in. Paddling is no different, and having a buoyancy aid can help keep you safe and give you that extra peace of mind.

We have Pursuit Buoyancy Aids available which are adjustable and have a secure fit. These are a great way to enhance safety in an efficient way.

We always recommend giving your buoyancy aid a once over to ensure it is still offering the desired levels of safety and protection. Take a look at our buoyancy aid MOT guide for more on how to do this.

Changing Capsule

One thing often overlooked is changing into and out of the apparel we wear when paddling. This is all too often done in awkward places like cars or toilet blocks, so Gill has brought a better option to the table.

Our Changing Capsule is a superb alternative to help you get ready for the water and get changed again after you are done. Our Changing Robe can be changed under, while our Aqua Parka provides exceptional warmth and comfort while around the water. And our Changing Bag is a really handy option, allowing you to carry items and then use the bag as a mat. Perfect for changing on rocky surfaces!
